Summer portrait painting

I've been spending the summer practicing portrait painting on leftover plywood (my dad's doing renovations). Here's what I've got done so far :)

Mock Mississauga Souvenirs

Vintage Exotic Travel Posters - Issued by the City of Mississauga

Too poor to afford to travel abroad? Want to cross all those places off your bucket list but just don’t have the time? Then look no further and take a day trip to Mississauga, city of a million districts! And while you’re there grab one of these (LIMITED EDITION) Vintage Exotic Travel Posters, so you’ll always remember all the fantastic places you visited. All these exotic locations are only a 15 minute bus ride apart, but when you get there you’ll swear you’re in a different country! The locals will act completely inhospitable and highly nationalistic and will start stereotyping you the minute you set foot there, but isn’t that part of the fun of traveling?

Mock "souvenirs" done for a Conceptual Process class. The posters are poking fun at all the stereotypes of the different high schools around where I grew up. Done in Photoshop and Illustrator.

Lady Marie Austin Turner Study

Study of Lady Marie Austin Turner by John Singer Sargent. Aprox. 5 hours.

Artway Invitational Gallery and the Police Artists of Peel shows

Recently I had work up at the Artway Invitational Gallery set up by Visual Arts Brampton in Brampton Ontario. I had a show with my sister Jean and then we later entered as sister artists in their "Runs in the Family" exhibit. Their website is http://www.visualartsbrampton.com/ and they're always looking for emerging artists to display. It was an incredible opportunity, I met some really great people through it. Thank you VAB for supporting the young artist community!

I actually met the coordinator of Visual Arts Brampton through another show I was in earlier in the year. That one was for the Police Artists of Peel show where they gave bursaries and a spot in their show to two young artists in the Peel Region. Their website is http://www.policeartistsofpeel.ca/artists/Welcome.html and they have the show annually. It's pretty cool to see two fields that seem completely unrelated brought together in one show.

Digital Painting Study

So...I finally did a digital painting! It's a study of John Singer Sargent's Lady Agnew. I spent about 8 hours on it.

I've been putting off digital painting for a few years now and have made a bunch of excuses about why I prefer "traditional media"...which was mostly because I just couldn't get the hang of it. Recently I realized that it was because whenever I tried to start a digital painting I would just jump in, with no references or experience and automatically expect myself to churn out a good painting. It hit me that I should treat it like any other medium that I've never used before and therefore I should practice and learn it before expecting to be good at it. With all the other mediums I'm comfortable with, like watercolours, oil painting, acrylic and even coloured pencil, I've spent years training to get to that point.

So now I'm going to be doing a lot more digital painting studies (especially since I recently injured my tailbone and will be stuck in bed...and therefore will have nothing to do but paint!)

Forget me so Quickly (finished)

The finished pieces all together! Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to photograph them properly, so the quality of the colour is really low and some of the images have been distorted.

This was how the piece was displayed on the night of our artshow. Crazy time putting it up, took about an hour, I kept getting distracted and it kept not looking right ahah. But it did looked a lot better in person...the space was way too small to get a full photo of it all put together.
